Sample practice plan:
Since our focus is on teaching the fundamentals of each event, the coaches dedicate a large portion of each practice to instruction. We use a station model to teach the events. The athletes are organized according to age group (ages 7-9, 10-12, 13-14); boys and girls practice together. At the stations, coaches teach skills and then put the athletes through drills. There are track AND field stations at every practice, but the event stations vary from week to week. At the beginning of the season, we encourage all athletes to try every event we offer (all events except for pole vault, triple jump, and javelin). Once the athletes get a little bit of experience with each event, we give them the choice to specialize. At the end of practice, there is sometimes a competition, usually a relay of some sort.
